Gor Mahia climbed to the top of the FKF Premier League after a commanding 4–1 victory over Kariobangi Sharks at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and head coach Charles Akonnor revealed a tactical masterplan that left the Sharks scrambling.
Surprise selection, instant payoff
K’Ogalo struck early and often. Ben Stanley Omondi and Ebenezer Adukwaw put the hosts two up before the break, and the game was put beyond doubt in the second half by impact substitutes Samuel Kapen and Felix Oluoch.
Humphrey Aroko’s late strike for the Sharks was merely a consolation on a night when Gor Mahia dictated the script.
Akonnor explained that the victory began on the team sheet.
“We made some changes to the starting eleven, which I believe paid off as we got some fresh legs and a different dimension that our opponents were not anticipating,” he said, underlining how selection gambles can flip a fixture.
Substitutions that swung the game
The Ghanaian coach admitted he was forced into an early change when Ebenezer limped off at half‑time, but that switch only sharpened Gor Mahia’s edge.
A triple substitution in the 73rd minute, bringing on Paul Ochuoga, Fidel Origa and George Amonno, was designed to steady the midfield and inject energy up front. It was the bench, though, that delivered the knockout blows.
“Sharks were the better side for some part of the second half, but our substitutes helped to stabilise the team with Kapen and Felix scoring to kill off the game,” Akonnor reflected, praising the squad depth that turned the contest in K’Ogalo’s favour.
Leadership and loyalty rewarded
Amid tactical tweaks and fresh faces, Akonnor reserved praise for club stalwart Philemon Otieno, who made his first start of the season.
“I am so happy with Philemon, who had his first start and had a good game. He has been a loyal servant of this team and deserves all the good things,” the coach said, highlighting the blend of experience and youth powering Gor Mahia’s resurgence.
